Consortium of consultants

Development consulting

Used in respect of services offered by experts using best practice based on evidence from research to deliver workable solutions to development issues.

Disfunctional Turnover

The involuntary loss of quality staff often described in financial terms with respect to profitability of a business venture or enterprise as a measure of business performance.

Economic benefits/deliverables

These benefits concerns growth of financial capital and its management. Together with social and environmental benefits often referred to as the triple bottom line.

Enabling environment

This is used in reference to conditions conducive for investments to thrive and bring returns. Investors generally look for these conditions in deciding on where to invest. These conditions may include: Provision of infrastructure (roads, power, water, transportation, communication, etc) - these may provide further opportunities for investments under a Public Private Partnership arrangement. Providing a relatively stable socioeconomic environment that is good for investment - good governance (international requirements) issues are important considerations. Improving regulatory environment and encouraging free enterprise. International promotion as preferred Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) destination. Providing targeted fiscal incentives (e.g. tax concessions, specific subsidies, grants, etc). Developing local skills and competences to standards that investors require for labour in industry.

Environmental benefits/deliverables

These deliverables protect the environment and together with social benefits can lead to Sustainable Development. Global issues like global warming and the search for alternative earth supportive and friendlier technology are highlights.

Head office

we are located centrally within the main business district of the city of London and are easily accessible by public transportation. We are only a few blocks away from the Bank of England and Bank tube station.

Integrated

The bringing together of two or more experts from diverse fields in products/projects development or structured and organised composition of various parts of an economy or a system so that there is coordination and harmony in the entire system.

Multilateral organisations

These are bodies in which there is international interest and funding to achieve specific targets and objectives. The United Nations and its Agencies are examples.

Private sector

This is in contrast to public sector largely run by private people as individuals or group with profit motivation. The degree of regulation varies from country to country.

Programmes

This may also mean projects depending on the context and field of use and refers to a planned coordinated schedule of activities to achieve defined objectives. For our purposes, these activities aim at developing social infrastructure to generate social capital.

Projects

Activities (for our purposes physical infrastructure) that are planned and implemented to achieve specific objectives. It is often used together with or interchangeably with programmes.

Public Sector

This is an important part of the economy (often regulated) that spends public finance in the provision of goods and the delivery of services particularly effecting all citizens in basic and essential ways. This is undertaken by government and contribution to the economy could vary from country to country and within countries. General services such as healthcare, education, policing, defence, mass transportation, etc are included. These bring benefits to the society as a whole on an ongoing basis.

Sectors

This represents the various subdivisions that exist within an economy with their specific objectives

Social benefits/deliverables

These are benefits that come to everybody in the community or society with particular reference to the poor an often excluded from mainstream. It includes the provision and access to healthcare, education, housing, clean water supply, power supply, clothing, food, employment, etc. It includes encouraging participation in society, growth and development of social capital, harnessing and mobilisation of human capacity to achieve high socioeconomic potentials.

Social Economy

This is often called the third economy and exists in between or alongside public and private sectors. It has a triple objective of achieving social, environmental and economic benefits to communities and individuals who may be otherwise excluded from mainstream economy. It is made up of the voluntary, community and social enterprise sectors and could play significant roles in bringing about socioeconomic stability (driven by fairness, inclusivity and equity) and growth within the integral parts of a country or state.

Solutions

Generally this means to solve problems. For us at SCIC, it means the application of the product of research and best practice, in consultation with beneficiaries to problems in such a way that it brings satisfactory results. We encourage and support clients to consider a holistic approach to solutions design looking at root cause and effect.

Strategic Level Consulting

This involves the use of Strategic Management tools in working with clients to diagnose performance related challenges, and then craft, implement and evaluate strategies that should enable organisation improve on and sustain high performance with their social, environmental and/or economic objectives. Strategic level consulting is the highest level (level of control) of management consulting requiring knowledge, skills, competences and the proper attitude.

Sustainable Development

This is used in reference to human activities that respect and protect the environment and society in the pursuit of economic gains such that our generation can leave the earth in stable and good condition for habitation and preoccupation by future generations

Triple bottom line

This considers venture performance beyond financial profit but includes social and environmental deliverables as complements. It is the yardstick for measuring performance of social enterprises within their defined objectives
